Miracle Monday – Doni Hoffa’s Hurley Prom

Saving a life – saving the day with a Hurley Medical Center prom!

Doni Hoffa’s life changed forever in 2002 when she was struck by a car while jogging near her home in Almont. The impact of the accident hurled her onto the windshield and then sent her air born into a ditch. This good student and avid runner was rushed to Hurley where she immediately underwent surgery to insert a brain pressure monitor. She was transferred to the Pediatric ICU (PICU) where she remained in a coma, fighting for her life. Doni had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. The only good news was that she didn’t break any bones.
After 29 days in the PICU, Doni was transferred to Hurley’s Inpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit. She tackled her rehab with intensity. While she worked hard to get better, Doni was missing out on a lot during her senior year including her prom. So, the team at Hurley prepared Doni and the unit for her very own prom! She wore her beautiful dress and received the “works” — hair, make up, etc. Her boyfriend, Mike Flinn, arrived and was happy that the girl who’d been voted Prom Queen by her Senior Class finally got to wear her crown. Doni was discharged 45 days after the accident.
Fast forward: She and Mike got married and are the proud parents of two beautiful children. Doni is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and earned a Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesiology from University of Detroit Mercy. Doni sets a new standard of delivering excellent patient care each and every day because of her belief: “Never give up. I thank God every day for my family, Hurley and Children’s Miracle Network. I am forever grateful.”
