Miracle Families and COVID-19

This is an extremely tense time for many of our miracle families. With COVID 19 spreading they have concerns about their children – especially those with weakened immune systems due to treatments like chemo or radiation. They worry about the virus coming into their homes. They worry about trips to the hospital, where COVID-19 patients are also being treated. Hurley Children’s Hospital is doing everything it can to keep a sterile, safe, social distanced experience for our kids.

April Paraschos gave us a first hand look this past week at Charlie’s experience getting his routine spinal.

“Today we made the trip to Hurley for Charlie’s routine spinal. I am not going to lie and say that it isn’t scary walking into a hospital that has COVID patients. We were diligent not to touch anything and we put on our superhero masks and gloves. It is eerie walking into a hospital that the lobby is completely empty. Our normal greeting with our front desk was filled with signs to indicate staying 6 feet away and masks and gloves covering their smiles. We proceeded to the clinic and there is a definite apprehension amongst everyone. I want to impress upon those of you that aren’t on the frontlines or near the frontlines that this is really tough on our healthcare workers. They are just as afraid of this invisible enemy. I am afraid because every time we come to Hurley (which is twice a month), the 14 day clock starts over with, “Was Charlie exposed?” We are taking every precaution and pray it is enough. Tonight and every night we will say a prayer for these heroes. Onward Charlie?”
We have also had the incredible fortune of celebrating families who know all too well what it is like to quarantine, hand wash and social distance, even before COVID-19. Hadlee Deines elebrated the anniversary of her leukemia diagnosis, with a second chance birthday, and a shout-out the Hurley Facebook page.
“The stress of hand washing, quarantine, and routine disruption is nothing new to families like the Deines. Today, on the anniversary of their daughter Hadlee’s leukemia diagnosis, they celebrate her “second-chance birthday”, and the amazing champion she has been over the last four years of her life. Hadlee is truly a miracle. Today we are celebrating her health, and thinking about the health of our world. In this trying time, please know our thoughts are with each one of you as you work to balance the impact of COVID-19 on your families and businesses. #HurleyCares”
We have had to postpone our Radiothon to support miracle families like this. We are doing what is right and safe for our community. Please know, we haven’t stopped thinking of our kids, protecting our kids or preparing for their futures.
