Miracle Monday – Amari Ramsey

Amari Ramsey’s journey did not begin at Hurley Children’s Hospital, but Hurley is definitely where it ended and her mom, Julia, couldn’t be happier for that. Throughout Julia’s entire pregnancy, she had preeclampsia and was considered high risk at 28 weeks. She was put on bed rest at another area hospital because of the condition.

After a weekend at the hospital, doctor’s agreed that Julia could be released as long as she took it easy leading up to her next appointment at 30 weeks. When she went back for that appointment, her doctor joked, “you’re not going to give me a break, are you?” They laughed together and Julia said, “Wow, that’s good huh?”. Julia was sent to Labor and Delivery where they monitored her for 4 hours. They were unable to get her blood pressure down, and her doctor told her  he had spoken to the high risk team and the NICU doctors over at Hurley Children’s Hospital and they all agreed she needed to be transported to Hurley “just in case”. She planned to be home in the morning.

Around 9am on August 14, 2018 Julia was awakened by 2 doctors standing in her room. One of them looked at her and said “Ms. Young, after speaking with my colleagues we have decided it is no longer safe for you or baby and we need to perform an emergency c-section.” Julia was in complete shock. But after speaking to the Hurley doctor who would be performing her delivery and to the NICU doctor, she felt much more at ease.

Her daughter, Amari Ramsey was born via emergency C-section weighing only 3lbs 2.8oz. At first, Julia could not hear any sounds coming from her baby and for those agonizing minutes, the world stood still. Then suddenly the tiniest cry came from little Amari, and Julia was instantly relieved. Although Amari was making noise, she wasn’t breathing well on her own, she couldn’t maintain her body temp, she had a feeding tube and she was having bradycardia episodes.  Julia was scared!

“I didn’t know what was going to happen but any time I had to leave, nurse Kristy and the team in the NICU made me feel so reassured that Amari would be ok,” said Julia. “She made me feel like nothing was ever wrong with Amari. She had so much love to give my baby and I couldn’t be more thankful that she was there.”

Today, Amari is a beautiful, healthy, adventurous two year old and mom, Julia, couldn’t be more grateful. So much so, in fact, she is leading the team at Walmart Store #1928 this year as Front End Team Lead.

“Children’s Miracle Network is so much more than people realize.  You never know just how much CMN does until your child is the child needing that miracle!  This program helps pay for so many things that these miracle’s need. Please don’t wait until it’s your child who needs help to make a donation.”

Julia is proud to help raise awareness and money for #HurleyChildrensHospital now through July 25th during their annual fundraising campaign. Whether you go through the cashier’s line or do self-checkout, YOU can help babies like Amari face a brighter future. EVERY dollar makes a difference.
