Winning the Fight

Linden boxer Joey Spencer is teaming with Hurley Children’s Hospital to knock out childhood cancer.

Spencer is a super welterweight with 6 K-Os. This past weekend, he surprised another fighter, 11 year old Dei’On Wright. Dei’On was diagnosed with a Wilms Tumor as a baby. The tumor was more than half his weight. Hurley doctors removed the tumor and his kidney, surgery that could have killed him. It didn’t. Dei’On has recovered.

Now, Joey Spencer is flying the 11 year old Flint boy and his father to his next fight in Minneapolis to be part of his team. Dei’On will get to enter the ring and locker room and experience the world of boxing through Joey’s eyes. It will also be his first time on a plane.

That’s important to Joey Spencer. He has always seen his career and life as bigger than boxing and has hoped to support Children’s Miracle Network. “It’s a great thing to recognize people who have gone through struggles in their life to try to help them have a good time but also raise awareness for other kids,” said Spencer.

He’s glad to have Dei’on in his corner saying, “He’s a survivor but there are other kids who are still in the fight.”
