Charlie’s Cancer Miracle!

You never forget that moment a doctor says your child has cancer. Charlie Paraschos was diagnosed with leukemia on February 21, 2018.

His mom April says, “As a parent your mind races to fear and instantly you feel your world is crumbling around you.”

At first this Goodrich family didn’t understand why they were being referred to Hurley Children’s Hospital. Their doctors knew children with cancer need a CMN Hospital with the most innovative technology and partnerships with top oncology teams in the state to beat this horrible disease. The family soon learned how true that was. They bonded with everyone from doctors to nurses to the person making their smoothies each morning. The hospital embraced them and they embraced the hospital, often helping raise money through fundraisers.  After 1,214 days Charlie rang the bell following his final treatment. (See emotional video below.) Socially distanced, his Hurley family was there to cheer and shed some tears.  Charlie is now cancer free.

“They’ve become our family,” says April. “They make you feel you are the only patient in the building. It’s a testament to not only the Hurley staff but to the integrity of Hurley has a whole.”

The Cook Elementary 2nd grader in Grand Blanc is now enjoying Teddy, a new golden-doodle. His port will be removed at Hurley Children’s Hospital in December – but we hope to keep in touch and see what amazing life awaits this healthy boy.
